Alleged mall shooter to stand trial

PITTSBURGH — A man charged with shooting three people at a suburban mall has been ordered to stand trial on attempted homicide, aggravated assault and other charges.

A judge made the ruling at a preliminary hearing Wednesday after hearing testimony from a detective and a woman wounded Feb. 7 at the Macy’s at the Monroeville Mall.

Prosecutors say Tarod Thornhill, 17, of Penn Hills targeted a 20-year-old man during an argument, and wound up also shooting Mary Singleton and her husband, who were shopping nearby.

The alleged target was shot in the pelvic region and lost half. He remains in the hospital. Singleton and her husband have been released.

Farrell player faces drug charges

FARRELL — The starting point guard for Farrell High School, which is playing in Friday’s PIAA Class A basketball final, has been arrested on drug charges.

Eighteen-year-old Jamel Brown was arrested Monday and missed Farrell’s Tuesday semifinal victory over Kennedy Catholic. Farrell plays Constitution in Hershey on Friday.

School officials didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment on Brown’s status with the team.
