Pa. resort to be sold

W. Va. newspaper family to buy Seven Springs

CHAMPION — The family that has owned Seven Springs Mountain Resort, a year-round getaway in the mountains of Western Pennsylvania, for 74 years will sell the property to a West Virginia family in the newspaper business, officials announced Monday.

The Dupre family has agreed to sell the resort to the Nutting family, which owns the Wheeling, W.Va.-based Ogden Newspapers chain.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

"We have been admirers of the Dupre family and Seven Springs for many years. Their insistence that Seven Springs be a family-first resort will not change under my family's ownership," Robert Nutting, chief executive officer of Ogden Newspapers and chairman of the board for the Pittsburgh Pirates, said in a statement.

Seven Springs Mountain Resort is one of two applicants for the state's two available slot machine licenses for resorts.

In March, Seven Springs unveiled plans for a $5.4 million slots parlor that would have 500 slot machines, create 350 jobs and would allow the resort to build an indoor water park sooner than planned.

The proposed 26,900-square-foot slots parlor would be built on the resort's existing conference center. Seven Springs is also planning to upgrade its 400-room hotel.

Scott Bender, the resort's chief operating officer, said Seven Springs has notified the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board of the sale. Bender said he didn't know if the slots application would be affected.

The sale "means a secure future for many years to come" for the resort and its 1,500 full- and part-time employees, Bender said.

The resort currently offers a variety of activities, from skiing to golf to paintball. About 1.2 million people visit Seven Springs each year, the resort said.
