Man accused of leading police on high-speed chase

Donegal resident charged with DUI

FAIRVIEW TWP — A Donegal Township man was more than twice the legal limit for alcohol early Wednesday morning when he allegedly led state police on a high-speed chase.

But Michael Pears Jr., 29, wasn’t ready to give up even after troopers cut off his pickup truck near Fairview Road, according to court documents.

Pears ran but was quickly caught after a 100-yard dash.

He was arraigned on a felony count of fleeing or attempting to elude police as well as driving under the influence.

Additionally, he was cited for driving at an unsafe speed, a stop sign violation, disregarding traffic lanes. improperly backing up a vehicle, careless driving and reckless driving.

He was placed in the Butler County Prison following arraignment and was later released after posting $2,500 bail.

Patrol troopers about 1:10 a.m. spotted the defendant’s pickup traveling toward the intersection of Haysville and Fairview roads. The truck failed to stop at a stop sign, police said, as it turned onto Fairview Road.

While pursuing Pears, the troopers’ cruiser reached speeds of 70 to 80 mph, documents said.

At one point during the chase, police said, the suspect put the truck in reverse and backed up toward the patrol car. The truck turned abruptly into an adjacent embankment and sped off.

Pears drove onto a gravel access road but was soon cornered by a fence and wooded area, police said.

The defendant took off running but was nabbed. Police suspected he had been drinking.

A breath test later showed his blood-alcohol level was 0.17 percent. A level of 0.08 percent is considered intoxicated under state law.

A preliminary hearing is set for July 19 before District Judge Lewis Stoughton.

Pears, meanwhile, is already awaiting trial in Butler County Court, stemming from a drunken-driving arrest May 7 in Concord Township.
