GC United Way updates funding

5 priority areas are added to its bylaws

GROVE CITY — The Grove City Area United Way is getting its priorities straight.

At its annual meeting Wednesday, the organization's board of directors voted to revise its bylaws to add five priority areas for funding.

The areas:

• Crisis intervention

• Children and youth development

• Strengthening families and promoting self-sufficiency

• Supporting vulnerable populations and community enrichment through education

• Development of vulnerable populations.

According to Dorene Powell, executive director, the revision was made to add clarity to the process of deciding how much funding member agencies receive.

This year's campaign chair will be Sharon Shipton of the Grove City School Board, who served as co-chairperson last year.

At the meeting, the organization announced that it had distributed $201,750 to its member agencies and special programs this year.

Following is a list of member agencies and the funds allotted to each:

American Red Cross of Mercer County, $20,000; AW/ARE, $10,000; French Creek Council Boy Scouts, $3,000; Catholic Charities, $2,250; Children's Aid Society, $15,000; Community Counseling, $6,000 and Penn Lakes Council Girl Scouts, $3,000.

Grace Food Pantry, $7,500; Grove City Community Library, $22,000; Grove City Literacy Council, $10,000; Grove City Meals n Wheels, $5,000; Keystone Blind Association, $3,000 and MCAR, $4,000.

Mercer County Juvenile Advisory Council, $3,500; Mental Health Association of Mercer County, $1,500; Pine Grove Community Center, $6,000; Grove City service unit of the Salvation Army, $12,000; Shenango Valley Urban League, $3,000 and Grove City YMCA, $40,000.

To complete the total, the organization set aside $25,000 for venture grants, which are given to agencies seeking to perform projects outside of their plans when original requests for funding were made.
