Tornado swim teams competitive against Fox Chapel

BUTLER TWP - Never mind the record. It's all about the competition.

And the Butler's swimmers and divers have been getting a lot of it lately.

In Thursday's meet against Fox Chapel, Tornado coach Amber Schmeider said she was more concerned about getting her athletes set for bigger things down the road after the Foxes came away with a 95-84 decision in the girls meet and 106-70 in the boys matchup.

"I told them coming in that I'm not interested about the season record," said Schmeider. "Our goals are the state meet, the WPIALs and who can get there, but we also want personals bests along the way.

"Every meet, we've had five or six personal bests from both the boys and girls teams," she added.

"I did some research and I wanted the meet to be competitive. I moved some of the kids to other races," said Foxes coach Todd Clark.

"We've been progressing very nicely," he added.

The Butler girls team (2-5, 0-2) received first-place performances from Jessica Schnur in 1-meter diving (217.55 points), Jessica Vernon in the 100 butterfly (1 minute, 5.71 seconds), Molly Evans in the 500 freestyle (5:28.82) and Sarah Clouse in the 100 breaststroke (1:13.19).

The 200 freestyle relay team of Sam Harris, Brittany Vogel, Clouse and Evans also (1:47.02) also was victorious.

Vogel's time of 5:38.38 in the 500 freestyle and 2:04.78 in the 200 freestyle also met the WPIAL qualifying standard.

Other personal bests on the girls side included Harris in the 50 freestyle and Schnur in diving.

For the Tornado boys team (1-6, 0-2), first-place finishers were Matt Galante in the 50 freestyle (23.34) and 100 freestyle (52.06), Eric Clouse in the 200 IM (2:18.12) and John Rhodaberger in diving (184.10).

Gilliland was third in the 100 freestyle, but shaved five seconds off his personal best, while Dan Bellis (50 freestyle), Zach Reiser (200 IM), Brad Duke and Roberto Ferrasi (200 freestyle), John Rhodaberger (diving) and Cliff McKee (100 backstroke) also set personal records.

"I'm looking for those personal best," said Schmeider. "That's a constant throughout the meets.

"In the past four years, we've had an individual or a relay make it to states and not just make it, but do better and swim their best time."

Fox Chapel improved to 6-1, 1-1 (boys) and 5-2, 1-1 (girls).
