SLIPPERY ROCK — Some tickets are still available for the performance by the Army Field Band Jazz Ambassadors, the Army's premier touring jazz orchestra, at 7 p.m. June 27 in Miller Auditorium on the Slippery Rock University campus.

Up to six tickets per person for the free concert may be obtained by sending a self-addressed, stamped envelope to the SRU University Public Relations Office, 1 Morrow Way, 201 Old Main, Slippery Rock, PA 16057. Tickets may also be obtained by visiting the public relations office.

The 19-member band will perform patriotic, big band, swing, contemporary jazz and Dixieland selections, conducted by Army Chief Warrant Officer Kevin Laird.

Concerts by the Jazz Ambassadors are designed to entertain and support the armed forces and diplomatic efforts.

Custom compositions and arrangements highlight the group's creative talent and gifted soloists. Their diverse repertoire also includes bebop, Latin, jazz standards, popular tunes and vocals.

JACKSON TWP — Seneca Valley High School's production of "Seussical: The Musical" garnered nearly as many awards as it was nominated for at the Henry Mancini Musical Theatre Awards presented May 24 at Geneva College's field house.Seneca Valley was one of three winners in the following categories: dance performance, costumes, student orchestra, vocal ensemble, overall production, outstanding male in a supporting role for Jon Lutz and noteworthy performance by an individual for Zach Renner.The musical also won one of four awards for noteworthy performance by a group for Ryan Handerhan, Cy Fleming, Steve Millett and Garrett Evans.

NEW CASTLE — "Figuratively Speaking" opens Sunday at the Hoyt Institute of Fine Arts, 124 E. Leasure Ave.The Hoyt's new exhibit takes a similar play on words with the new works of four artists. In one respect, it is very literal — the selected artists collectively represent the human figure in their work. On the other hand, they are rather symbolic — using the human figure to reference art history, politics, and what it is to be human in different ways.Artists include Japanese-American artist Kenju Urakubo, Deanne Dunbar of Meadville, James Rettinger of Coraopolis, and Ken Daugherty of New Castle."Figuratively Speaking" opens with a free public reception from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday. Complimentary refreshments will be served.The exhibit will remain on display through July 14.Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.Admission is free. MUDDY CREEK TWP — The operating dates for the historic oil well and powerhouse at Moraine State Park will be June 10 and 11, July 8 and 9, Aug. 5 and 6 during the Regatta at Lake Arthur, Sept. 9 and 10 and Oct. 7 and 8.Hours will be 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on these days.Volunteers will be on site to demonstrate, operate and explain the well equipment for visitors. The equipment is period machinery restored to original operating condition. PITTSBURGH — The REP, Point Park University's professional theater company, is conducting auditions, by appointment, for the upcoming production of "The Real Thing," written by Tom Stoppard and directed by Robert Miller.Appointments will be accepted from noon until 7 p.m. Tuesday.Rehearsals begin Aug. 8. Pistons for Pets Ride for the Paws Poker Run will begin with registration at 11 a.m. July 29 at Snack-n-Pack on Alameda Road.Cost is $15 per rider and $10 per passenger. Proceeds benefit Rainbow Animal Refuge.The ride will end at Blondie's Bar in Hilliards. A dinner buffet will be served. SLIPPERY ROCK — Jennings Environmental Education Center will offer summer nature discovery programs for children ages 6 to 8 on Tuesdays beginning June 27. Hours are from 10 a.m. to noon.The program is an informative, creative, interactive series offered at many state parks. Children learn about the natural environment through games, nature trails, crafts and hands-on experiences.The fee is $5 per individual session or $20 for the entire five-week session. Upon completing six hours of programming, children will earn a patch and certificate.
