SHARON — Police say a high school football coach was attacked Sunday in his home by an unarmed intruder, whose attack was stopped by a local police detective who lives nearby.

Sharon police could not immediately be reached for comment on the attack.

Police Chief Mike Menster said the suspect, who police haven't named publicly, forced his way into Sharon High School football coach Jim Wildman's home about 4 p.m. Sunday and began assaulting Wildman.

Wildman was taken to a Pittsburgh hospital and admitted, while the suspect was taken in custody to a hospital near Sharon for treatment.

Police have not said why they believe the attack occurred, though Menster says it was “unprovoked.”

Wildman retired as Sharon's coach in 2002, only to be rehired in February.
