History-making Knights!
GREENSBURG — The spin on Isabella Bucy's pitches is a little different.
The results she got with it Tuesday were a lot different.
Thomas Jefferson's junior left-hander was rocked for 13 hits by Knoch in the WPIAL 4A softball consolation game at Seton Hill University. The Knights' 7-2 victory put Knoch (18-2) in the PIAA Tournament for the first time in the program's history.
“It's awesome ... fantastic,” Knoch pitcher Amanda Fischer said. “People don't even know where Knoch is. They ask us and we always say Butler. It's a lot easier.”
The Knights made hitting look easy in this game. Bucy entered the contest having allowed only two runs in her last four games and five total hits in the Jaguars' previous two playoff games.
“They just out-hit us,” TJ coach Heidi Karcher said. “They were putting swings on balls that we weren't expecting, based on what we've seen of them.”
Knoch senior first baseman Erin Luffy plays travel ball with Bucy “and she explained to us the spin she puts on the ball.” Knoch coach Gary Coe said.
Luffy hit a towering home run to left in the fifth inning against her summer teammate, giving the Knights a 5-2 lead at the time.
A run-scoring single by Haleigh Karcher have TJ (15-5) a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. But the advantage didn't last long.
Monica Gourley led off the Knoch first with a triple over the center fielder's head. Quinn Hughes followed with a double over the left-fielder's head to knot the game.
Luffy walked and Fischer singled to load the bases. Brynnae Coe followed with a sacrifice fly to give the Knights a lead they would never lose.
Bailey Rickenbrode added an RBI single in the second for the Knights. Mackenzie Zang homered for the Jaguars in the third, but No. 9 hitter Sophie Brandon delivered a sacrfice fly to get that run back in the bottom of the frame.
Luffy homered in the fourth and Gourley drilled a two-run single up the middle in the fifth to expand Knoch's lead.
“I wasn't expecting us to hit her like that,” Gourley said of Bucy. “Erin did tell us what to expect and I think our last game (4-0 loss to Elizabeth Forward) helped us adjust to increased speed and spin.
“We had not seen that this year until that last game.”
Gourley had three hits, two RBI and two runs scored. Fischer had a double and two singles. Rickenbrode and Olivia Vissari had two hits each.
Fischer scattered seven hits and did not walk a batter. She struck out five.
“When our hitters got the lead in the first inning, it definitely helped me mentally,” Fischer said. “I felt like I could just pitch my game. I knew I was going to be supported by our bats.”
A number of Knoch hits were sailing over the heads or off gloves of the Thomas Jefferson outfielders on a breezy day.
“I don't know what was going on with our outfield today. I have no answer for that,” Coach Karcher said.
Knoch will take on the District 10 champion Monday in the first round of the state tournament at a site and time to be determined.
“Is that who we've got? I don't even know,” Coe said. “All I know is we'll show up and play.
“We told the girls before the game. If we play our game, play at our level, play loose and play for each other, we'll be fine.”
Knoch won for the 14th time in 15 games.
“I think we're a sleeper (in the upcoming state tournament),” Fischer said. “Like I said, no one knows who we are.”
Gourley agreed.
“It's great being part of the first team to go to states,” she said. “The best news is we get to keep playing. We're not ready for this to end.”
