Man accused of dragging woman with SUV

A Center Township man is accused of attacking his girlfriend with a sport utility vehicle early Sunday morning after leaving a Butler bar.

Earl J. Phipps, 28, faces felony assault and other charges for allegedly dragging 25-year-old Brianne Renee Kradel of Lyndora with his Jeep Cherokee before driving away, Butler police said.

Kradel suffered "several large abrasions" and "severe pain throughout her entire body," a police affidavit said. She was treated at Butler Memorial Hospital and later released.

Officers found Kradel with injuries they described as serious after being called about 1:20 a.m. for an assault at Pillow Street and Hansen Avenue. She told police that Phipps, her boyfriend, had assaulted her, according to court documents.

Moments earlier, the couple had argued after leaving a bar on Pillow Street.

"Kradel stated she was only partially inside of the vehicle as Phipps intentionally drove eastbound on Pillow Street, and she was forced to hold onto the door," the affidavit said.

The woman told police she screamed for Phipps to stop as her body was being dragged across the road.

When he would not stop the Jeep, Kradel said she had "to push herself away from the vehicle as she was in fear of being pulled underneath of the vehicle's tires," according to the affidavit.

District Judge Pete Shaffer on Monday issued an arrest warrant for Phipps, who is charged with aggravated assault, reckless endangerment and simple assault.

Court records showed state police in April 2009 arrested Phipps for allegedly assaulting Kradel in Center Township. However, charges of simple assault and harassment in that case were dismissed before they reached Butler County Court.
