Man dies after being struck by passing vehicle

SALEM TWP, Mercer County — An 18-year-old man was struck and killed by a pickup truck Sunday night when he got out of his car after hitting a deer on Greenville Sheakleysville Road, state police said.

Zachary R. Shook of Sheakleysville was pronounced dead at the scene of the 9:20 p.m. crash.

The teen had been traveling east on the road, less than a ½-mile east of Methodist Road, when his car struck a deer. Police said Shook parked his vehicle in the middle of the road, partially blocking the westbound lane.

Shook got out of his car and was struck by a westbound 2002 Dodge Dakota driven by Wayne Rump, no age given, of Greenville.

Police said a 2000 Chevrolet S-10 Blazer, driven by Betty Boca, that was traveling behind the pickup, also was damaged in the crash.

Assisting state police were police from Greenville and Hempfield Township, and Hempfield Township firefighters.

No charges have been filed and the crash remains under investigation.
