Raiders getting 2nd shot
ROSS TWP — Every time the Peters Township girls lacrosse team seized the momentum, Seneca Valley was there to spoil the Indians' enthusiasm.
The Raiders jumped out to an early 5-0 lead and never let Peters Township closer than three goals in a 14-8 victory in the WPIAL Division I semifinals Tuesday night at North Hills' Martorelli Stadium.
The Raiders (14-4) will face section foe Sewickley Academy in the title game at 8 p.m. Thursday at the same venue.
For Seneca Valley coach Dina Hughes, her team's latest win was a total team triumph.
“We're lucky to be strong in all three aspects — attack, midfield and defense,” she said. “We played as a team tonight and that was the key.”
Sam Struss (2), Morgan Midkiff, Paige Corathers and Taylor Mayeda all found the net in SV's scoring spree in the first 12 minutes, 12 seconds of play.
In that same span, the Indians were denied by SV goalie Lauren Moran on each of their three shots on goal.
“Getting early goals is big because it gets the (opposing) goalie off her game,” said Struss, whose night included a total of three goals. “You just have to keep going hard.”
The Indians' first sign of life came when Hannah Wilcox scored goals less than two minutes apart, cutting SV's lead to 5-2 midway through the first half.
But by intermission, Struss, Midkiff and Audrey Semel scored to boost the Raiders' edge to 8-2.
Peters Township (12-6-1) scored two quick goals to open the second half, but Seneca Valley tallied five of the next six goals to take complete control with a 13-5 lead with 8:22 left on the clock.
Kelly Cundiff led SV's offense in the second half with three goals.
“I wouldn't say our girls gave up, but we just weren't clicking tonight,” said Indians' coach Kristin Caponi. “Our shot percentage was poor.”
Moran made 15 saves for the Raiders, while Melanie Morgret had seven stops for Peters Township.
Wilcox scored five of the Indians' eight goals.
The Raiders find themselves in the same spot they were in a year ago, playing for a WPIAL title. SV lost to Franklin Regional in the 2010 finals by a score of 7-5.
“Our communication is so much better this year, on both offense and defense,” said Mayeda, who scored two goals in Tuesday's win.
“We weren't that familiar with Franklin Regional last season,” said Hughes. “But we've played Sewickley twice this season and beaten them both times.”
