Butler County's great daily newspaper

BASA answers needed

On Dec. 10, the Butler Eagle published a letter written by Linda Kalina regarding her nightmare with the Butler Area Sewer Authority.

Then, in an article in the Dec. 17 edition, BASA cited many problems and the need for a rate increase.

This brings to my mind many questions that need to be answered.

In her letter, Kalina discussed BASA's attempt to make her pay for something for which she was not responsible. Questions to ask are:

1. How many other residents have been forced by BASA to pay for repairs or updates that were not their responsibility?

2. Have BASA and the Butler Eagle requested a survey from all local residents who have had similar problems over the past five years, so the information can be published in the newspaper for all to see?

3. It was noted that BASA employees doing the testing offered to contract to make repairs. Under what and whose license are they working with?

4. If the repair work was done under the BASA license, was the income reported in BASA's income?

5. If not, did the individuals who propose to do the repairs without a license plan to get a permit?

6. Did they plan to show the income from the work to be done with the Internal Revenue Service?

7. Where has our township zoning manager's position been in all of this? Surely, the manager is notified of sewage problems and planning as they occur. Or did this all just happen yesterday?

8. Every time a permit to build is issued, both the zoning manager and BASA are in the loop. What happened to the follow-up, or is this the "Good Ol' Boys System"?

Before another increase is approved, both BASA and the Butler Township commissioners need to account for the past five years regarding incidents that are similar to Kalina's, and make public the results, if any, to the Butler Eagle.

Maybe our local residents needed this wake-up call, and hopefully the township commissioners and BASA will be held accountable for any wrongdoing.
