Nationwide IRS phone scam remains concern

A nationwide phone scam featuring people impersonating Internal Revenue Service agents continues to be a major concern for both state and federal authorities, but state police in Butler say they don’t believe any county residents have fallen victim to the scheme.

“It appears county residents have been using good judgment,” said Trooper. Dan Keston, a communications officer at the state police barracks in Butler.

He said despite the lack of success the barracks “constantly get(s) calls,” from people who have been contacted by scammers using the scheme.

“There definitely is a lot of calls being made to residents in the county,” Keston said.

He advised people to simply hang up on the scammers, who often claim to be IRS employees and threaten people with arrest, deportation or suspension of their driver’s or business license before demanding personal information or payment.

State police say the ploy is being used nationwide. Last year, the Federal Trade Commission received nearly 55,000 complaints regarding the impostors, a 25 percent increase from 2013.

Since 2013 more than 400,000 people have filed complaints with the U.S. Treasury Department citing IRS impostors. The scam has defrauded more than 3,000 people and stolen more than $15 million, according to state police.
