Helen Comperatore responds to Secret Service suspensions
As news about the suspension of six U.S. Secret Service agents breaks, Helen Comperatore is still waiting to hear from the agency.
The widow of Corey Comperatore — the Buffalo Township man who was shot and killed at the July 13, 2024, campaign rally for then-candidate President Donald Trump — said she has heard from thousands of people around the world, including the president himself, but never from the Secret Service.
"What bothers me is that I haven’t heard from the Secret Service,” she said. “It’s been nearly a year, and I haven’t heard a word.“
Comperatore said she personally wants to speak with the Secret Service, and that it upsets her that she has not been able to do so yet. She had wanted to speak to the agents who were at the Butler Farm Show grounds amid the assassination attempt, but she would welcome a conversation with anyone to help her understand how and why the shooting took place.
Multiple media outlets reported on Wednesday, July 9, that six Secret Service agents faced suspension without pay for security failures that led to the assassination attempt on Trump that took the life of Corey Comperatore.
“Secret Service is totally accountable for Butler,” Matt Quinn, deputy director of the Secret Service, told CBS news. “Butler was an operational failure, and we are focused today on ensuring that it never happens again.”
At first, much of the crowd at the July 13, 2024, rally for Trump thought they were hearing fireworks during the attack. As they realized that shots were being fired on the rally, many and dropped to the ground.
Helen Comperatore said she heard a “blood-curdling scream.” The cry was from her daughter, Kaylee, who watched helplessly as her father was hit by a stray bullet and died.
Comperatore’s widow said she recalls scooping her husband, Corey, up in desperate hope of saving him.
In the weeks following the assassination attempt, the Secret Service faced criticism for its failure to deter the act of violence that took Corey Comperatore’s life.
"Nobody will ever understand. They (Secret Service) need to answer to me for those moments,“ Helen Comperatore said.
