Ice bucket challenge back to help Children's Hospital

Members of Walmart's management left their shifts Saturday soaking wet, and two left with newly shaved heads.

Yet it wasn't a stressful day of work, but one of fun and fundraising. Store employees at the Walmart supercenter in Butler Township raised money for the Children's Miracle Network over the past month for a chance to dump ice water on their managers, while two managers put their hair on the line to each raise an additional $500.

This opportunity raised more than $6,500, which went towards the store's total of about $14,000 for the UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh.

“They rallied behind that,” Walmart store manager Angela Fleeger said about the ice bucket initiative. “Not just to dump water on their managers, but to raise money for the Children's Hospital. It was all in good fun.”

According to Fleeger, Walmart corporate administrators ask each store to raise money for the Children's Miracle Network annually. The corporate campaign ran from June 28 until July 25.

The money, which is often given by customers rounding up their bill to the dollar, added up to about $7,500. That topped off the employee fundraising to reach the total of about $14,000.

“We had a tremendous support from the community,” she said. “Without the backing and support of the community in Butler, we would never have gotten that much.”

Fleeger said the success of the ice bucket campaign was a good way to bring store employees and the community together again.

“I just knew this year we wanted to do something special,” she said.
