OUTAGE-RELATED NEWS

Here is a list of electrical outage-related news:

• The Red Cross in Butler will open its two shelters from 4 to 10 p.m. today. The shelters are at Knoch Middle School and Slippery Rock High School.

Each of the shelters hosted 40 people Wednesday. Most eat meals, while some others took showers. The shelters closed at midnight when no one showed up to stay the night.

Red Cross executive Jody Knights said she would decide whether to keep the shelters open longer after talking today with utility companies.

• Dassa McKinney Elementary School resumed classes this morning and will hold classes on Friday, said Trudy Peterman, superintendent. The Moniteau School District on Wednesday had announced the school would be closed for the rest of the week. However, the situation changed with the resumption of power to the school building.

• Slippery Rock University has opened the shower facilities at Morrow Field House for area residents. The facility will remain open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. through Friday.

The university, which never lost power, had many students, faculty and staff in the surrounding areas who did lose power, a spokesman said.

Also, these SRU facilities are always available to the public:

• The University Union, including a game and television room, is open today until midnight and until 10 p.m. Friday.

• Rocky's Grille in the Union is open from 10:30 a.m. to midnight today and from 10:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Friday.

• Bailey Library is open from 7:45 a.m. today to 2 a.m. Friday and from 7:45 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday.

• Besides calling for assistance, some victims of the wind storm called the Red Cross with the misguided idea that they could be eligible for federal disaster relief checks. However, the county-ordered state of emergency does not include such relief.

County emergency services director Frank Matis said there wasn't enough structural damage to warrant state or federal involvement.

• Matis said the county's 911 center got more 1,100 calls between 7 p.m. Sunday and 1 a.m. Monday, including more than 400 calls or alarms between 9 and 10 p.m. Sunday.

• Evans City Volunteer Fire Department has drinking water available at its fire hall at 124 N. Jackson St.

Eagle staff writer Tom Victoria contributed to this report.
