City robber uses weapon to take money from pizza delivery man

A pizza delivery man was robbed possibly at knifepoint Wednesday night after being lured to a Butler apartment building.

The victim, a Center Township man, was treated at Butler Memorial Hospital for a superficial cut that occurred during the robbery at about 10:15 p.m.

Butler police are searching for the unknown robber who is described as a black man in his 20s.

The suspect apparently made a setup call to the West Cunningham Street Pizza Hut for a delivery to a home in the 300 block of West Jefferson Street.

The robber, dressed in a black or dark blue hooded sweat shirt with the hood pulled over his head, waited at the bottom of a stairwell as the Pizza Hut driver unknowingly went to deliver the order.

The driver told police he was accosted from behind in front of the apartment building. He said the robber placed a knife or some other sharp object to his neck and demanded money.

Police said the suspect took the wallet the driver used for his job, ran across West Jefferson Street and down an alley. The wallet contained an unspecified amount of currency.

The victim called 911 on his cell phone and spoke to officers at the scene. He said the strong-arm robbery was over in 15 to 20 seconds.

Police checked with the occupants of the apartment to which the delivery was intended and learned no such order was made by the tenant there.

The victim returned to the pizza shop before driving himself to the hospital, where he was examined and given a tetanus shot.
