City man accused in beating

Woman allegedly attacked in bathroom

A city man stands accused of beating, robbing and cutting a woman who had been living in his North Washington Street apartment.

After the alleged Thursday attack, 26-year-old Lawrence R. Stiefel reportedly forced the victim to shower, change clothes and walk to the Rite Aid pharmacy on Main Street for bandages, according to court records.

The victim, 28-year-old Stephanie L. Splain, was able to contact emergency officials when her attacker told her to wait for him at the Pizza Hut restaurant on West Cunningham Street while he returned to his home to stash $260 he'd allegedly taken from her, according to court records.

Splain told officials she'd been living with Stiefel for about a week, but planned to go to her mother's house that day. She called a taxi, and went into the bathroom to get ready, according to court records.

Splain told officials she thought Stiefel was joking when he called her "cold" for leaving, according to court records.

But shortly after, Stiefel walked into the bathroom with a knife and said, "if you weren't going to leave, I wouldn't have to do this," according to court records.

Splain reported to police that Stiefel struck her head above her right eye with the knife and punched her in the left eye, according to court records.

Splain said Stiefel held the knife to her throat, then swung it near her head and neck, according to court records.

Splain told officials that when she raised her left hand, her palm was sliced by the knife. She then caught the knife in her right hand, but Stiefel pulled it away, cutting her hand between the thumb and forefinger, according to court records.

"She stated it all happened so fast she did not even know what was going on," the criminal complaint states.

Splain said after the attack ended, Stiefel ordered her to clean herself and he cleaned blood off the floor, walls and sink, according to court records.

Splain told investigators that she followed Stiefel's instructions, including the eventual walk to the pharmacy, his demand for her cash and the stop at Pizza Hut around 8 p.m. "as she was in fear for her life," the criminal complaint states.

Police said Splain was treated at Butler Memorial Hospital for serious wounds to her face, neck and hands. She later was released from the hospital.

As paramedics first tended to her in the Pizza Hut parking lot, Splain spotted Stiefel walking across the street and alerted police, according to court records.

When police arrested Stiefel, they found a military-style Bowie knife with a 6-inch blade tied by rope to the calf of his left leg, according to court records.

Police later that evening, after obtaining a warrant, searched Stiefel's apartment and found Splain's bloody clothes, "blood all over the apartment, blood-soaked towels," according to court records. Blood-covered cash also was found in a chest of drawers, according to court records.

Stiefel is charged with a felony count of aggravated assault, robbery, unlawful restraint and simple assault.

He was arraigned Friday morning by District Judge Kevin O'Donnell.

His preliminary hearing will be held at the city office of District Judge Pete Shaffer, but no date has been set.

Meantime, Stiefel is in the Butler County Prison, unable to pay his $50,000 bail.

Court records show Stiefel has a criminal history in Allegheny County that includes a 2004 conviction of robbery while inflicting serious bodily injury.
