Organization helps make seniors’ wishes come true

In the Wednesday, July 2, edition of the Butler Eagle, we learned about Carl Selfridge’s great day at the ballpark thanks to the Twilight Wish Foundation.

Selfridge, a 90-year-old U.S. Navy veteran, is a lifelong baseball fan, but a stroke had kept him from being able to attend a game in person in years. Enter the Twilight Wish Foundation, which took Selfridge and 15 members of his family to the Pirates vs. New York Mets game on Saturday.

In addition to the game, Selfridge was presented with a Pirates jersey with his name and age on the back, as well as a baseball bat signed by Andrew McCutchen and a baseball signed by Paul Skenes, his favorite players.

The Twilight Wish Foundation came out of an encounter in Bucks County in 2003, when foundation founder Cass Forkin paid for lunch for several senior citizens.

In the more than 20 years since, the foundation has helped grant more than 7,000 wishes for older people nationwide.

“Every wish we grant has a story behind it: a story of a life well-lived but with a dream not yet realized,” the foundation’s About Us page reads. “We are privileged to make those dreams come true and share those stories with the world. And by sharing those stories, we are helping to inspire a culture that values and respects our senior population.”

We think that is an excellent goal and are grateful there is a Twilight Wish chapter in Butler County. We hope they continue to make people’s golden years a bit more golden.
