Future with natural gas

It’s not every day that one finds a liberal Democrat like Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and conservative Republican Gov.-elect Tom Corbett supporting the same industry.

Reid has been trying to push through Congress the gas promotion bill. The bill would provide $4.5 billion for natural gas vehicles in the form of rebates for purchasers and subsidies for manufacturers. Corbett intends not to support any new taxes on natural gas production.

Both men have their critics, from the environmental groups to the various energy groups that would lose business and tax breaks, because of the increased usage of natural gas. What surprises me is that the environmentalists are aligning themselves with industries like coal (which involves removing mountaintops for it), ethanol (which causes food prices to rise and erosion), oil (we’ve all heard about the Gulf of Mexico oil disaster), and windmills (even I like to look at the scenery without seeing thousands of windmills and, besides, a lot of bats and birds are killed by the turbines).

Then there’s solar power (it might prove to be beneficial in the long term, but it’s very expensive and takes a lot of panels to reduce other energy needs).

I believe natural gas can fulfill all of America’s current and future needs.
