Tough day on the links

Alexa Glew of Mars High, seen here during Tuesday's second round of the Pennsylvania Junior Girls Golf Championship, was inspired by her older sisters to become more serious about golf.
Tourney score doesn't reflect Glew's promise

PENN TWP — Alexa Glew always has been around the game of golf.

The 16-year-old, who will be a junior at Mars High, remembers watching her elder twin sisters, Marisa and Lauren, excel on the course.

But golf wasn't a major interest for Alexa until recently.

Marisa and Lauren now are playing at Bowling Green State University in Ohio and Alexa has finally caught the competitive golfing bug.

"I've been golfing for a while, but I was never really serious about it until a year and a half ago," Glew said after completing her final round of the Pennsylvania Junior Girls Golf Championship at Butler Country Club Wednesday.

"Watching my sisters play at Bowling Green, playing competitively, really made me want to do that, too," she added.

Glew then began to focus on the finer points of her game. It didn't take her long to realize she could shine like her sisters.

As a freshman at Mars, Glew played well, but it wasn't until last season that Glew's game took off, firing a 73 at Blackhawk Golf Course to win the MAC Championship.

Glew sait it was after that victory that she knew she could compete with the best.

"Last year, at some point, things changed," Glew said. "I started playing really well and getting consistent during the high school golf season. I played really well at the MAC Championship and that just really made me want to play that well again."

Glew's game is still a work in progress.

In the three-round event at the Butler Country Club this week, Glew struggled with consistency. Her score card displayed that in brutal detail, with pars sandwiched around double- and triple-bogeys.

Glew was much more consistent in the final round Wednesday, shooting her best score of the tournament with a 93.

She finished 17th in the event.

"I know what I have to do to get better," Glew said. "I feel like there is a lot of improvement still to be made."

Should Glew have a question about her swing, she has to look no further than her twin sisters.

Lauren Glew finished her junior season at Bowling Green with the second lowest scoring average on the team at 82.75. Marisa Glew's average for the Falcons was 85.05.

"We help each other a lot, so it's really nice I have them," Alexa Glew said. "I've been to a lot of places with them, watching golf. I've seen them have a lot of good days and some bad days, so that helped me realize there will be ups and downs."
