Man faces DUI charges

Police: He caused crash

OAKLAND TWP — A suspected drunken driver accused of causing a crash Saturday night that left a woman seriously injured later jumped out of an ambulance and ran away, authorities said.

Gregory Jay Miller, 31, of Oakland Township made his alleged getaway outside Butler Memorial Hospital, where he was taken for treatment of his own injuries and for a blood test.

He managed to elude capture for about 17 hours before he turned himself in to police Sunday afternoon at the state police barracks in Butler Township.

District Judge Lewis Stoughton later arraigned Miller on felony and other charges in the case.

Police said they first encountered Miller about 10:30 p.m. Saturday after they were called for a two-vehicle collision in the 300 block of Route 68 in Oakland Township.

The crash happened, according to court documents, when the defendant's speeding Kia Sonata crossed the center line and struck an oncoming Nissan Sentra.

The other driver, who authorities only identified as a 31-year-old Butler woman suffered injuries that police described as “severe.” Her condition was not known this morning.

Miller, who also was injured, appeared intoxicated and admitted to drinking beer before the wreck, police said.

He told investigators that moments before the crash he “saw headlights” and after “felt two impacts.”

The suspect was taken to an ambulance for preliminary treatment. Troopers also gave him a portable breath test, documents said, which confirmed the presence of alcohol in his system.

An ambulance crew drove him to the Butler hospital. But once there about 11 p.m., police said, he fled the ambulance. Investigators believe he got into an unknown vehicle near the helicopter pad and drove off.

Troopers checked for Miller at his home on Davis Road and at his girlfriend's house but could not find him.

He eventually showed up on his own about 4 p.m. at the barracks.

Stoughton later that night arraigned the defendant on a felony charge of aggravated assault by vehicle while driving under the influence and a misdemeanor charge of DUI.

He also is charged with disregarding traffic lanes, driving at an unsafe speed, careless driving and reckless driving.

Police noted this was Miller's second DUI arrest. Court records showed that he was convicted of drunken driving in 2007.

He is jailed in the Butler County Prison on $50,000 bail.

Along with setting bail, Stoughton ordered Miller to be placed on pretrial supervision upon his release. Among those conditions are that he submit to random drug and alcohol testing and wear a Secure Continuous Remote Alcohol Monitor unit.

The tamper-resistant SCRAM device is strapped to an offender's ankle and analyzes the wearer's perspiration to determine whether the person has been drinking.
