Code orange air quality declared for Sunday, Monday
Individuals with breathing sensitivities should take precautions on Sunday, June 22, and Monday, June 23, with a code orange air quality action day declared by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.
Butler is under the code orange alert for both days.
The department of environmental protection said in a Friday news release that Sunday will see air quality issues around southwestern Pennsylvania due to sunny skies, light southwest winds, temperatures in the low 90s and limited vertical mixing creating ozone concentrations in the code orange range in the afternoon.
Monday could also include counties further north. High pressure will create hot conditions with temperatures in the mid to upper 90s, light southwest winds and very little air recirculation.
The release said during a code orange, young children, the elderly and those with respiratory problems such as asthma, emphysema and bronchitis are especially vulnerable to the effects of air pollution and should limit outdoor activities.
