Butler Transit Authority prohibits gas, electric-powered mobility devices
Unfortunately for tech-savvy commuters, Butler Transit Authority is only allowing traditional bicycles onto their buses in the future.
The Butler Transit Authority Board of Directors voted 4-0 at its meeting on Tuesday, June 17, to approve an amendment to the authority’s current bike policy. The updated policy bans all gas or electric-powered mobility devices, such as electric skateboards and self-balancing scooters, from being brought onto any bus.
“All of the bike policy information is remaining as it was previously,” authority solicitor Rebecca Black said. “If it’s a nonmotorized, two-wheeled, human-powered bicycle, then it can go on the bike rack. Otherwise, it’s not permitted on the bus or the bike racks.”
Black said this is not the first, and likely not the last, time the policy has been amended.
“I think we’ve amended it four or five times to add different things, different creations,” Black said.
Board members said their primary concern was related to the volatility of lithium-ion batteries. They said they hope the policy will not need amended again for some time.
Riders with assistive technologies are exempt from the policy, board members said.
