3 school districts' plans enumerated
Here's a look at two recently settled teacher contracts and a proposal on another contract.
The South Butler School District settled last month after 2Z\x years of negotiations.
The Freeport School District settled June 30, more than a month before the current contract expires Aug. 22.
The Karns City School District has negotiated for a year with its teachers. The contract there expired June 30, 2009. Teachers have set a Sept. 1 strike date.
South Butler teachers agreed to pay increases averaging 3 percent each year of a six-year contract. The average teacher salary in the district before the contract was $51,249.Under this contract a teacher making the average salary would see retroactive pay for 2008-09 of $1,716. The same teacher would make $54,846 in the current year; $57,122 in 2010-11; $59,578 in 2011-12; $62,140 in 2012-13; and $64,812 in the final year.The Freeport contract has a 4.6 percent pay increase for the district's teachers. The starting salary for a new teacher will be $36,000 for the 2010-11 school year, and the current average teacher pay will be $42,841 for the first year of the contract.The district's highest paid teacher will receive $75,077 in the final year of the contract. That teacher will make slightly more than $70,000 in the 2010-11 school year.The Karns City teachers are proposing a 3.95 percent salary increase. The current average salary in the district is $52,812.Using the teachers' proposed increase, a teacher making the average salary would make $54,882 in the current year, $57,033 next year, $59,268 in 2011-12, $61,592 in 2012-13, and $64,006 in 2013-14.The school board has proposed a 3.6 percent increase each year. Its proposal also would boost the starting salary to $38,500 in the fifth year of the contract.Under the board's plan, a teacher making the average salary would make $54,713 in the current year, $56,713 in 2010-11, $58,723 in 2011-12, $60,837 in 2012-13, and $63,027 in the final year.
The amount South Butler teachers pay for their health care has increased.During the next four years, teachers will make deductible payments of $250 for an individual and $500 for a family for in-network care. The deductibles for out-of-network care are $500 for an individual and $1,000 for a family.The plan in the expired contract did not include a deductible for in-network care and charged up to $100 per person and $300 for a family for out-of-network care.Contribution toward premiums will begin to rise starting this month. And, by July 1, 2013, individuals will pay $40 per month and families will pay $50 per month. That's up from $10 for an individual and $20 for a family in the expired South Butler contract.Freeport teachers won't make contribution toward health premiums. But, for the first time they must pay an in-network $100 deductible for a single person and $200 for a family. They also will have an increase in health insurance co-pays, which will be $20 per doctor visit. The deductible for out-of-network care is $250 for a single teacher and $500 for a family.Karns City teachers are offering to contribute $15 per month for an individual and $25 a month for a family for health care. The board wants $40 for an individual and $50 for a family.Teachers currently pay $10 per month for health care. There is no additional payment for family coverage.
