Lee Garrard, owner of Lee's School of Dance in Butler, on July 13 helped set the world record for longest line of non-conga dancers in New York City's Times Square.
Dance Masters of America, of which Garrard was president at the time, organized the event as part of its annual convention.
More than 1,200 dancers from across the country kicked their way from 42nd Street to 45th Street, to the tune of "New York, New York."
Other people joined the line as it snaked along, including Diane Sawyer and Charlie Gibson of "Good Morning America" of ABC Television, two police officers and a taxi driver.
Garrard said the event was a success, and there were even more people than was reported.
"It was very exciting," she said.
Jessica Smith, daughter of Dennis and Lynne Smith of Butler, recently received the editor's choice award for a poem she submitted to an online poetry contest. Her poem will be recorded in a poetry CD set.Smith will also be named in the 2003-04 sports and academic editions of Who's Who Among American High School Students.
At the Butler Farm Show in August,Fred Fritz of Valencia won 500 gallons of heating oil courtesy of Purvis Brothers in Mars."We have a big giveaway every year at the Farm Show. It's a lot of fun and people like it," said Mac Purvis, Jr., a third generation owner.
