IN BRIEF
Butler Memorial Hospital was honored by The Hospital & Health System Association of Pennsylvania for its pneumonia vaccination initiative, one of 16 winners from 100 entries.
The association "honors creativity and commitment to patient care" through its annual awards. Categories for the 2008 awards were workforce, community outreach and engagement, patient safety, patient care and operational excellence.
BMH's award was in patient care. When a patient older than 65 is either admitted to the hospital or brought to the Emergency Department, they are asked if they have received a pneumonia vaccination for that year. If not, they are offered the shot as part of routine care. This initiative resulted in less hospital-acquired pneumonia cases, BMH reported.
