Couple charged in list of crimes

Pair allegedly stole, sold items

A Butler couple face a list of charges stemming from three separate cases filed Wednesday by city police.

Joshua Michael Crispin, 20, and his girlfriend, Surenu Erika Frank, 25, are accused of breaking into a house attached to the home where Crispin's mother lives.

In another crime, police said, they allegedly stole items belonging to Frank's grandmother.

Both defendants are in the Butler County Prison on $35,000 bond each.

Police began investigating the pair on Jan. 30, when Nancy Daye contacted police about several items stolen from her West Penn Street home.

Daye suspected Frank, her granddaughter, and Frank's boyfriend, Crispin, according to court documents. The couple recently needed a place to stay, Daye said, and she had offered them her home.

But while staying there, police said, the suspects stole a set of porcelain dolls, binoculars and other items valued at a combined $141.

They sold those items, documents said, at a store on South Main Street.

Frank, while staying at Daye's house, also signed for a delivery package intended for a next-door neighbor, but Frank and Crispin allegedly kept the items, which included clothing and a picture of Jesus, worth a combined $100.

The defendants, who admitted their involvement, are charged in that case with theft and receiving stolen property.

Police suspect the couple also stole a number of items, valued at $780, after breaking into the Morten Avenue home of Mariann Musick, documents said.

Stolen from the home were a computer, diamond earrings, a gold locket, two gold bracelets and hoop earrings.

Musick suspected Crispin in part because he was visiting his mother at the time of the break-in, documents said.

Police said his mother's home is attached to Musick's garage behind the victim's house.

Investigators quickly tracked down some of the stolen items at a Butler jewelry store, where the suspects had sold them, documents said.

In that case, Crispin and Frank, who allegedly acknowledged their involvement, are charged with burglary, theft, receiving stolen property and conspiracy.

Meanwhile, in the third case, both suspects are charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.

That case was filed after police went to speak with Frank at her grandmother's house Monday.

In Frank's bedroom, police said, they found a bag containing metal spoons with suspected heroin residue, used syringes and marijuana pipes. Frank told police the items belonged to her and Crispin.

Preliminary hearings for the defendants are Feb. 23 before District Judge Pete Shaffer.
