Fish fries during Lent help skate park effort
ZELIENOPLE — The group trying to raise money to build a new skate park in the borough will again hold fish fry dinners throughout Lent this year.
The dinners will be from 4 to 8 p.m. on four consecutive Fridays, running from Feb. 20 to March 13, at the Zelienople American Legion, 308 W. New Castle St. Customers can either eat in or get take out.
The skate park would be a memorial to three young men who lost their lives in a vehicle accident on Jan. 27, 2010: Trevor Barkley, Sam Bucci and Elijah Lunsford.
Since 2010, the group has raised about $135,000 through donations from the fish fries and other events.
It has set a final goal of $450,000, though the group is also seeking grants and may try to lower costs through donations of labor and materials, said Jeff Barkley, Community Park Association president and father of Trevor.
For the past several years the dinners has been the group's largest fundraiser. It hopes to sell more than 500 each Friday. Some materials are donated by businesses, while the other costs are covered by the ticket sales.
“The dinners and the entire event is run with family, friends and volunteers from our local churches. We could not pull this off without the service and sacrifice of these wonderful people,” Barkley said.
To promote the events, volunteers have created a mascot, called “TAB” who will be seen in the borough.
The skate park is planned for a 15,000 square-foot area in the Community Park adjacent to the swimming pool. It is currently occupied by a basketball court and part of the parking lot.
More information on upcoming events can be found on the Zelienople Memorial Skate Park Facebook page.
