PITTSBURGH — A day care owner and her daughter have each been sentenced to a year probation in the death of a 10-month-old baby in their care.

Forty-nine-year-old Loretta Bray pleaded no contest Monday to endangering the welfare of children. Her daughter, Ashley Swann, 22, pleaded guilty to the same charge.

Authorities believe Bray's 7-year-old granddaughter beat the 10-month-old baby and threw her onto a carpeted concrete floor, fracturing the baby's skull in 2008. Police say it happened at Bray's in-home day care center while Swann left the children alone briefly to change another child's diaper.

PITTSBURGH — The home of a man accused of killing three Pittsburgh police officers is scheduled to be sold at a sheriff's auction next month.Richard Poplawski is charged in the 2009 shooting deaths of three officers at his home in Pittsburgh's Stanton Heights neighborhood. He lived at the home with his mother, Margaret.The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that J.P. Morgan Chase Bank wants to recover nearly $60,000 it is owed by Poplawski's mother. The home was damaged in the shootout with police.

BANGOR — A longhorn steer has been killed by a hunter three days after it escaped from its owner en route to a slaughterhouse.The 1,500-pound steer, named Super Red, was shot Saturday in Upper Mount Bethel Township, Northampton County. The massive beast broke loose Wednesday after its owner stopped to give it some feed while he transported it to a slaughterhouse.
