Electric bikes, scooters causing problems

I'm sure I am not the only one who has noticed the growing numbers of electric scooters, electric bikes and bicycles in general riding on our streets and sidewalks. We also have a couple riding electric unicycles, one full size gas-powered minibike, a gas-powered bicycle and some sort of gas-powered four-wheeler that roam our area.

These operators are mature and the majority seem to ride these as their sole means of transportation. They ride on our city streets, in traffic, on sidewalks and through neighborhoods at speed. They are silent, without lights or registration or insurance.

They want to ride on the streets, yet more often than not they do not obey the traffic laws.

One operator rides north and south on North Main Street, in traffic and at the prevailing speed. I have seen the gas powered bicycle as far south as the Sheetz by the Kelly auto dealership riding on Route 8, in traffic.

I felt sorry for the gentleman who was hit by the bicyclist (“Butler bicyclist charged after hit-and-run crash with pedestrian,” May 7, Page 3).

As I recently stepped out to get my mail, out of the silence I heard “WATCH OUT” as an e-bike flew by, just missing me, on his way to the Get-Go, through our neighborhood, coming north on McKean Street from town. There is a proper time and place for these new gadgets, but is this it?
