The Slippery Rock University men's indoor track and field team claimed its first ever PSAC championship Sunday, edging Shippensburg 116.5-113.

Brad Mueller (Mars) was clocked at 6.31 seconds in the 55-meter dash title, and in the process, set a PSAC record and solidified his automatic berth in the upcoming NCAA Division II national championship meet.

Jeff Weiss also set a conference meet record with a winning time of 8:16.61 in the 3,000.

Runner-up performances by the 3,200 relay team (7:51.91) of Chris Geddis (Seneca Valley), John Strutt (Butler), Jason Jamieson and Philip Rector and Pat Reagan (14:35.30 in the 5,000) were also good for school records.

The SRU squad tied Shippensburg with 110 points to capture its second consecutive indoor crown.Jennifer Hansen was named Field MVP after setting a PSAC and school record in the pole vault with a leap of 13 feet, 1.5 inches. Whitney Hendershot won the high jump (5-9.25), which tied a PSAC mark and set a new school standard.Freeport graduate Lacey Cochran had three second-place finishes in the 1,600 relay (3:57.62), 200 (25.86) and the 400 (57.49).

The Rock opened the season with a 16-3 loss to No. 19-ranked host Bucknell University, then 9-7 to Mercyhurst College at the ECAC Championships Saturday.Heather Walbright had three goal, one assist and one steal and Beth Choike two goals, one assists and three steals.On Sunday, SRU was blanked 4-0 by Grove City College. Walbright and Choike added four and three steals, respectively.

Butler graduate Jade Burka, a freshman, ended the season second on The Rock men's team with 4.8 rebounds per game. SRUfinished 7-20, 4-8 in PSAC West play.
