MELBOURNE, Australia — Australia's largest casino company, Crown Ltd., said Wednesday it has agreed to buy privately held Cannery Casino Resorts LLC for $1.75 billion, expanding its business in Las Vegas.
Cannery Casino operates three Las Vegas casinos, including the Cannery Hotel & Casino, the Nevada Palace Casino and the Meadows Racetrack & Casino in southwestern Pennsylvania.
Earlier this month, Crown split from James Packer's Publishing & Broadcasting Ltd. after investors endorsed a plan to split PBL's gambling assets and media businesses into two separately listed companies.
PITTSBURGH — Tiffany & Co. will bring it's fine jewelry to the Pittsburgh area when it opens a store in a mall just north of the city next year.New York City-based Tiffany plans to open the store in October at the Ross Park Mall.Tiffany has about 70 stores in the United States and more than 100 others around the world.Tiffany plans a 5,700-square-foot store in the mall.The Tiffany brand inspired the title to Truman Capote's novel and the movie of the same name, "Breakfast at Tiffany's."The long-established company says President Abraham Lincoln bought jewelry for his wife from Tiffany's, which also designed the trophy for the first Super Bowl in 1967.
PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh City Council has tentatively approved a subsidy for the redevelopment of the former Nabisco bakery.Council's approval of $10 million in tax-increment financing for Bakery Square came despite concerns from a union, which says the subsidy should be withheld until the developer and prospective hotel operator agree not to oppose unionization.The school board and Allegheny County Council have already approved similar aid for the $113 million project that will have retail, housing, and office and hotel space.Half of the aid would go toward a parking garage on the site, while the rest will be used for road and other infrastructure improvements.A final vote by council is expected on Monday.
