5 seniors receive Central Electric scholarships

Marqui Milford

PARKER — Central Electric Cooperative has awarded $1,000 scholarships to 13 high school seniors in Cooperative service territory as part of its Good Neighbor Scholarship Fund.

The one-time award was granted to qualifying high school seniors who plan to attend accredited post-secondary schools.

Eligibility requirements included Central Electric providing service to the student or family members' permanent residence, submission of family financial information and a written one-page essay on how the student has contributed to their community.

Local recipients include Marqui Milford of Allegheny-Clarion Valley High School, Pamela Cox of Butler High School, Jonathan Burns of Karns City High School, Ellie Hilliard of Moniteau High School and Sarah Myers of Union High School.

The program was made possible as a result of Act 187 approved by the Pennsylvania Legislature in November 2006, which permits electric cooperatives in Pennsylvania to retain unclaimed capital credits to improve the quality of life in rural areas.

Energy assistance, educational scholarships and civic projects are targeted funding areas. Prior to Act 187, cooperatives were required to return the unclaimed property back to the state treasury after five years.

Central Electric is a Touchstone Energy Cooperative serving about 25,000 members with more than 3,000 miles of distribution lines in portions of Allegheny, Armstrong, Butler, Clarion, Forest, Mercer and Venango counties. Visit the Website at www.central.coop.
