Miller Minutes: Show up in style for this weekend’s events

Miller Minutes with Butler Eagle reporter, Molly Miller

Earlier this week, the entertainment industry’s elite were strutting their stuff on the blue carpet at the Met Gala, a fundraiser for the New York City museum’s fashion archive.

The theme this year was Superfine: Tailoring Black Style, and focused on the fashion trends of the Harlem Renaissance. The outfits adorning the likes of Rihanna, Sabrina Carpenter, Stevie Wonder and Usher were obviously inspired by suits, ties and tails.

It is easy for the commoner like me to gawk at the gaudiness of some of these outfits and judge the people wearing them. However, I think carpet appearances like these remind us of a more glamorous time, and how much of an affair “stepping out” used to be.

Think about it — people used to go dancing as a date, now they go to the movies in their pajamas (not that I’m complaining … you honestly think I want to wear an evening gown to a midnight movie?).

Some would say fashion has depleted, some would say it has evolved for comfort and efficiency. Whatever your stance, it’s fun to look at the outfits from the Met Gala and imagine wearing those out in public, even just to events around Butler.

While the events we have in store for you this week may not require a top hat and cufflinks, some may encourage you to show up in style.
