Portland hires McMillan as coach

PORTLAND, Ore. - Paul Allen got the coach he wanted by persuading Nate McMillan to leave the up-and-coming Seattle SuperSonics for his rebuilding Portland Trail Blazers.

The Blazers hired McMillan, the man known as "Mr. Sonic," late Wednesday night. McMillan, who led surprising Seattle to the Northwest Division title this past season, will be introduced Thursday at a news conference, the Blazers said in a statement.

McMillan's contract with the Sonics expired July 1 and the Blazers aggressively pursued him. The terms of his contract with Portland weren't immediately available.

McMillan's departure came a day after Seattle signed All-Star free agent Ray Allen to a five-year, $85 million contract extension.
