JACKSON TWP — It's business as usual, sort of.

With two weeks left in the regular season, the Seneca Valley football team plays at Pine-Richland at 7:30 p.m. Friday and at home against Butler Oct. 30.

Beating the Rams, coupled with a Butler loss to North Allegheny this Friday, would clinch a playoff spot for the Raiders.

"We look at every section game as a big one," said Raiders' coach Don Holl. "But the kids don't live in a cave, they know if we win this week, it pretty much assures us of a playoff spot."

The Raiders are coming off a 33-7 home loss to Shaler in which the Titans outgained them 342-109.

The Raiders' short passing game struggled to find its groove all night long as quarterback Donny Holl was 5-of-13 for 33 yards.

"There's an appropriate time to try and stretch the field," said Coach Holl. "At the same time, what we're trying to do is complete a high percentage of passes and get the ball to kids who can make a play for us."

Despite SV's struggles last week, Pine-Richland coach Clair Altemus believes his defense is in for a stiff test, facing a no-huddle and spread offense.

"You're not going to stop them on every play," he said. "We're an attacking defense, but that's what (SV) wants you to do. If you attack them, they'll slip something by or behind you. The spread offense seems to be the popular offense for high schools to run these days.

"We told our kids that they have to take away what Seneca Valley does best, which is the option out of the shotgun."

Senior wideout/halfback Evan Hetzel was injured in last week's game and if he is unable to go, the Raiders (3-4, 1-2) may turn to Troy Witt, who has rushed for 140 yards and a touchdown this year.

The Rams (3-4, 1-2) lost to North Allegheny last week, 40-7. The team's wins have come against Montour (20-6), Highlands (45-7) and Butler (28-6).

"We're playing a lot of sophomores and juniors, but I've seen a lot of maturity in the younger kids," said Altemus. "Even in our losses, I've seen some positives."

Senior quarterback Eric Kordenbrock is in his second year starting for the Rams and has thrown for 752 yards with 10 touchdowns and three interceptions.

In last year's 17-14 win at Seneca Valley, Kordenbrock completed seven of 20 passes for 173 yards, a pair of touchdowns and one interception.

"I've seen a lot of maturity on his part," said Altemus. "He's reading defenses better and I'm pleased with his progress. I believe he's definitely a Division I recruit."

Kordenbrock's favorite target is junior split end Tommy Berexa, the only Rams player with double digit receptions with 27 for 393 yards and five scores.

Junior halfback Justin Williams leads the Rams' rushing attack with 677 yards and two touchdowns.

"I don't know if there's a player on their offense the caliber of (Shaler's) Jesse Della Valle, but not many high school teams have a player like that on their roster," Holl said.
