Raiders' heroics fall short in loss

JACKSON TWP — Déjà vu ran out of time.

In last year's meeting with Pine-Richland, Seneca Valley came from 17 points down to defeat the Rams.

On Friday night, the Raiders scored the final 22 points of the game, but the came up short in a 37-29 loss at NexTier Stadium.

SV cut Pine-Richland's lead to eight points when quarterback Jordan Brown found Mike Martin for a 2-yard touchdown pass followed by David Hall's conversion pass to Aaron Pynos with 12 seconds remaining.

Zach Morris then recovered SV's second successful onside kick in the final minutes.

On second down, Brown's pass from midfield was deflected by a Rams player before SV's Oliver Philogene pulled it in for a 30-yard gain as time expired on the Raiders' comeback hopes.

"Yeah, I thought it was going to be déjà vu," said Pine-Richland coach Clair Altemus. "We thought we had it under control tonight, but we stuck our second string in there and they made some mistakes. But I don't want to blame them. Maybe it's our fault for not giving them enough reps in practice."

Though he was disappointed by the loss, Raiders coach Don Holl was pleased by his team's comeback after trailing by 30 points with 8:21 left.

"There may be some things we are not as a football team, but I know one thing," he said. "We're a team that's going to fight, scratch and claw until the very end."

Christian Holowchak's 36-yard field goal put the Rams up 37-7 3Z\x minutes into the fourth quarter.

The Raiders (2-4, 0-3) responded when Forrest Barnes turned a swing pass from Brown into a 40-yard touchdown.

The Rams (2-4, 2-2) fumbled away their next possession when SV's R.J. McCauley recovered the ball at the P-R 20.

Runs by Barnes and Jon Dorogy set up Matt Edmondson's 4-yard touchdown run. Aaron Tanda's extra points made it a 37-21 game with 2:06 left.

The Raiders recovered their first onside kick, which led to Martin's short touchdown reception.

"Both teams had their (second string) out there," said Holl. "We get a fumble and score, and at that point it's only a two-score game. We had to try the onside kick."

The Rams used five Seneca Valley turnovers to build their lead.

Brown, a sophomore, threw four interceptions, with P-R's Colin Jackson returning one of them 12 yards for a touchdown late in the second quarter.

"Those interceptions are on me," said Holl. "I called some things that just didn't work out."

Trailing 14-0 in the second quarter, SV embarked on a seven-play, 79-yard drive that ended with Barnes' 2-yard scoring plunge.

A key play on the drive was Brown's 29-yard pass to Jordan Glaser.

The Rams scored twice before the end of the half to lead 27-7.

Barnes tallied 240 yards from scrimmage (155 rushing and 85 receiving) in defeat.
