BHS reports two deaths

One each at Butler Memorial, Clarion hospitals

As Butler County prepares to move into the yellow phase of Gov. Tom Wolf’s plan to reopen Friday, Butler Health System announced Sunday that hospitals in both Butler and Clarion counties lost patients overnight to the coronavirus.

While the numbers are not yet officially reflected in the data released Sunday by the Pennsylvania Department of Health, BHS spokeswoman Jana Panther confirmed the regional health care system saw two deaths — one in Butler County and one in Clarion County — over the weekend.

No other information or data were available.

Wolf announced Friday that 13 additional Western Pennsylvania counties, including much of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area, will join much of northern Pennsylvania that began emerging late last week.

Those counties — including Allegheny, Armstrong, Bedford, Blair, Butler, Cambria, Fayette, Fulton, Greene, Indiana, Somerset, Washington and Westmoreland — have a combined population of nearly 2.7 million residents.

The only western county held back, Beaver County, is home to perhaps the state’s worst nursing home outbreak, where dozens have died and a congressman is calling for an investigation.

Since Friday, state health officials reported nearly 2,400 new cases of COVID-19 in the commonwealth and 91 new deaths — including three deaths over the weekend in Allegheny County and one in Armstrong County.

“As we prepare to move a number of counties from red to yellow, we need all Pennsylvanians to continue to follow the social distancing and mitigation efforts in place,” Secretary of Health Dr. Rachel Levine said. “We must continue to protect our most vulnerable Pennsylvanians, which includes our seniors, those with underlying health issues, our healthcare workers and our first responders.”

Levine also reported that approximately 3,759 of the state’s total COVID-19 cases, roughly 7 percent, are in healthcare workers.
