County approves contract

It's for workers at Sunnyview

The Butler County commissioners on Wednesday ratified a new four-year contract covering roughly 200 union workers at the Sunnyview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Under the agreement, employees at the Butler Township nursing home receive 3 percent wage hikes in each year of the contract.

The workers, who are represented by Service Employees International Union Healthcare, on Jan. 27 voted 86 to 18 to accept the contract.

Matt Yarnell, vice president of SEIU Healthcare, said in an interview the employees approval was the right move.

“There’s really no concessions,” he said.

The new contract, which is retroactive to Jan. 1, continues the policy of workers paying a portion of their health care via a 1.5 percent paycheck deduction.

The county might increase the employee contribution and deductibles after the first two years if premiums exceed 10 percent in one year or 20 percent cumulatively.

Yarnell said the union is willing to explore alternatives to the 1.5 percent in such a case.

County Commissioner Jim Lokhaiser said in an interview the contract terms are fair, and he is glad the workers agreed.

“I think cooler heads prevailed,” he said about the overwhelming vote on Jan. 27.

The county already has new agreements with four bargaining units covering about 300 government center and courthouse employees.

The last major contract left to be negotiated is with the county prison’s correction officers. About 80 prison staff are covered under that unit.

The only other unit without a new agreement covers four county detectives.
