Water discharge mapped

CRANBERRY TWP — The township staff has completed a field survey of its stormwater discharge points and entire stormwater system in an effort to better manage it and update state Department of Environmental Protection requirements.

Township engineering intern Joe Caparosa, an engineering student from Penn State University, told the township supervisors Thursday evening his project was to map all of the township-owned, private and even state stormwater discharges through the township's GIS system.

The last time the study was done was in 2003-04. With the new software, the discharge coordinates are within a centimeter accurate compared to the old study which was within 1 meter.

According to Caparosa, the 2003-04 study showed 190 stormwater outfalls. Outfalls are the facilities where the stormwater is discharged directly into a stream.

The latest, more accurate, study determined that the township has 406 township maintained outfalls and 628 outfalls both public and privately owned.

The state Department of Transportation has another 100 stormwater outfall facilities within the township.
