Woman to register as sex offender

A Hilliards woman was ordered to register as a sexual offender for the rest of her life and was given a lengthy probation sentence Thursday in Common Pleas Court after she pleaded guilty to charges filed by state police for having sex with a teenage boy in 2016.

April M. Walker, 45, was ordered to register with the state police as a Tier III sexual offender under Megan's Law, and was sentenced to serve 108 months of probation, including 36 months of house arrest, for one felony charge for having sex with a complainant between 13 to 18 years old and concurrently serve 84 months of probation, including 18 months of house arrest, for a felony count of corruption of minors.

Judge William R. Shaffer imposed the sexual offender order and handed down the sentence after Walker made an apology.

“I apologize for the hurt I caused,” Walker said. She also told the court the therapy she has been undergoing for two years has been helping her.

She was represented by attorney David Shrager.

According to court documents, police found a 29-page letter, which revealed accounts of sex between Walker and the boy, in a truck owned by her then-estranged husband, Mark Durnell, after he committed suicide Sept. 30, 2019.

Durnell committed suicide after breaking into Walker's home and setting her garage on fire, police said. Walker had a restraining order against Durnell.

Walker initially told police that Durnell manipulated her twice into the sexual acts in September 2016.

Police filed 12 charges against her. The charges were three counts each of statutory sexual assault, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, corruption of minors and the charges for having sex with a person between 13 to 18 years old.

No action was taken on the charges to which she didn't plead guilty.
