BC3 women join nationals
Katresa Savisky earned Region XX Most Valuable Player honors after scoring 22 points to lead the Butler County Community College women's basketball team to a 77-76 win over Montgomery-Rockville (Md.) in the region championship game Sunday afternoon.
With the win, the Pioneers (16-10) head to the national tournament in Minnesota.
Casey Fleeger, who played all 120 minutes between the quarterfinals and finals, added 18 points and 12 assists and Ashley Campbell 16 points.
In Saturday's 67-61 semifinal win over Lorain (Ohio) County Community College, Fleeger also put up 18 points and 12 assists.
Savisky added 15 points, Campbell 10 points and Rachel Doutt 10 points and 21 rebounds.
Edinboro 84, Slippery Rock 45 — Julie Byer paced The Rock (3-23, 1-13) with 10 points.
Slippery Rock University senior forward Maron Brown tallied 13 points and 13 rebounds — giving him a school-record 18 double-doubles on the season — as The Rock closed the regular season with a 78-72 win over Edinboro on Saturday.Jabril Bailey and Tommy Kelly both contributed 15 points to the victory.SRU (19-9, 9-5) will open the PSAC playoffs against West Division rival Mercyhurst (20-6) in quarterfinal action at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Erie.
Slippery Rock’s Brady Wert won the heptathlon, leading The Rock’s men’s team to a fourth place finish at the PSAC Indoor Championships at Edinboro University Sunday.Wert was in third place after four events, but finished the seven-event competition with a total of 4,922 points, earning him the top spot.SRU’s Terrece Draper set a school record in the triple jump with a second-place effort of 14.64 meters. Preston Gibbs owned the previous standard at 14.57.On Saturday, Chris Warning won the weight throw (18.49 meters) and Cameron Daugherty the pole vault (4.87).• In the women’s meet, Kelly Bruder placed first in the pentathlon on Saturday, helping The Rock finish the two-day event in second place behind Shippensburg.Bruder totaled 3,366 points.
