Amish barn fire kills 204 calves; structure ruined
SALISBURY — A fire at an Amish barn killed 204 veal calves early Monday, state police said.
The fire shortly before 2 a.m. began in a coal-fired boiler used for heat at the Somerset County farm.
Daniel Brenneman said he had no insurance to cover the estimated $80,000 barn loss. The animals, worth an estimated $200,000, were under contract and he said their owner has insurance.
"We'll manage," he said as he cleaned up, helped by several dozen friends and neighbors. "We'll rebuild. In a time like this, everybody pitches in together and helps out, Amish or not. It's a great community."
State police fire marshal Terry Wilson ruled the blaze accidental. Wilson said the fire was sparked by a coal-fired water boiler.
