KARNS CITY — Anthony Stimac did it all for the Karns City football team.

The senior quarterback tallied 199 yards rushing, 91 yards passing and caught a key interception to put an end to Redbank Valley's hopes of a fourth-quarter comeback as the Gremlins won a 23-14 decision in a battle of undefeated teams in the Keystone Shortway Athletic Conference.

Karns City coach Ed Conto was more impressed with Stimac's ability to do something that doesn't show up in the statistics.

"The biggest thing Anthony did tonight was deal with the bad snaps and the penalties and not lose his poise," Conto said. "It takes a real leader to do that."

The Gremlins were called for 14 penalties totaling 100 yards and fumbled six snaps. That might have been partially due to the fact that they were playing without senior center Corey Gifford, who suffered a concussion in last week's game with Keystone.

Karns City (6-0) opened the scoring in the first quarter with a 50-yard touchdown pass from Stimac to senior wide receiver Dan Wolf.

Later in the first quarter, after Karns City was unable to move the ball past the Redbank Valley 20, senior kicker Josh Grenninger connected on a 37-yard field goal to extend the lead to 10-0.

After the Gremlins' defense held the Bulldogs scoreless and allowed only 25 total yards in the first quarter, Redbank switched quarterbacks.

Junior Shiloh Buchleitner replaced Brandon Bain and ignited the Redbank Valley offense. Buchleitner has been the Bulldog's starter at quarterback all season, but Bain got the call at the start of the game against Karns City.

On Buchleitner's second drive, he connected with senior wide receiver Kasey Haines on a 30-yard touchdown pass to make the score 10-7 with 5:52 left in the half.

On the first play from scrimmage in the third quarter, Buchleitner found senior wide receiver Jarret Magagnotti wide open in the middle of the field for an 83-yard score to give Redbank Valley its first and only lead of the game.

Losing the lead only seemed to motivate the Gremlins.

A little more than two minutes later on a crucial third-and-8 play, Stimac broke a tackle at the line of scrimmage and raced down the right sideline for a 63-yard touchdown.

On their next possession, the Bulldogs failed to capitalize on a golden opportunity.

Redbank Valley (5-1) punted from its own 4-yard line. When the punt came down near the 35-yard line, it touched a Karns City player and the Bulldogs recovered, giving them new life.

However, the Karns City defense held the Bulldogs to only three yards and Redbank Valley was forced to punt again. After the punt, Karns City took over on its own 16-yard line.

Two plays into the drive, Stimac turned an option play up field for 73 yards to put the Gremlins on the Redbank Valley 5. Senior running back Markus LaVan capped the drive with a 3-yard touchdown.

With several Gremlins running backs on the bench due to injury, LaVan carried the ball 16 times for 70 yards. LaVan also turned in a strong defensive performance with two interceptions.

Buchleitner threw nine straight incomplete passes in the second half, and Redbank Valley decided to switch back to Bain.

"Shiloh's our usual starter but Brandon went in there and did a great job," Bulldog coach BrandonRapp said. "I feel comfortable with both guys in there."

After Bain completed two passes, Stimac intercepted a long pass intended for Haines on the left sideline with 4:26 remaining in the game.

The Gremlins were able to run out the clock with strong runs up the middle by their fullbacks, Jake Wagner, Levi Buck, and Aaron Markle.

Bulldogs senior running back Alex Bladel entered the game as the leading rusher in the Keystone Shortway Athletic Conference. Led by seniors Bret Callihan and Earl Everetts, the Karns City run defense held Bladel to minus-1 yard on 16 carries.

"I thought our run defense was tremendous," Conto said.

Karns City has another tough opponent next week when it plays at Clarion. They will face a Bobcat team that is 4-2, with a loss to Moniteau and a triple overtime loss to Redbank Valley.
