Social Security officials set group sign up sessions

Social Security representatives in Butler County scheduled two public sessions this month to help those 62 years old and older to register for benefits.

They also are promoting online registration for benefits.

Darla Rine, operation supervisor, and George Ziecina, district manager, both in the Social Security office in the Holly Pointe building on Main Street, said they will have two three-hour sessions, one in Butler and one in Cranberry Township, to help register Baby Boomers.

"There are 78 million Baby Boomers with 10,000 Baby Boomers reaching age 62 each day for the next 20 years," Rine said, adding that is many more people than Social Security staffers can help individually.

Ziecina said the administration's Web site has featured online registration since 2000, but it is now a more important tool because of the number of people who will be signing up.

The two group registration sessions later this month are intended to help people who want to talk to a representative in person, Rine said.

The sessions will be Jan. 27 at the Butler Public Library on North McKean Street and Jan. 29 at the Cranberry Township Municipal Building on Rochester Road.

Ziecina said, "We are ready to schedule more meetings around the county, especially if the turnout for these is large, for municipalities who call us and have a bank of computers we can use to access the Internet."
