Butler Twp. receives $1.4M for intersection

Butler Township is receiving $1.4 million in state funding to make safety improvements at the intersection of Whitestown Road, Hansen Avenue and Armco Drive.

State Rep. Marci Mustello, R-11th, said the Commonwealth Financing Authority awarded the funds to the township.

“These grants represent valuable investments in ensuring safety, accessibility and business growth in our area,” said Mustello. “The improvements will reduce the number of accidents, and prepare the area for further development of the Pullman Center Business Park.”

The funding was announced Friday.

The township will use the money to construct two intersections adjacent to the business park.

In its current configuration, the intersection is the site of frequent vehicle accidents, Mustello said.

Dave Zarnick, president of township commissioners, called the intersection a “target area for high-speed violent crashes.”

The project will realign Whitestown Road to form a perpendicular intersection with Hansen Avenue.

In addition, Armco Drive will be realigned to reduce the road angle at its intersection with Hansen Avenue. Armco Drive will also be shifted to create a new intersection with nearby Hollywood Drive. New traffic signals at the intersections and pedestrian safety improvements that include sidewalks and time-signaled crosswalks are included in the project.

The project has been contemplated by the state Department of Transportation for 20 years, Zarnick said.

Support for the project by Mustello, state Sen. Scott Hutchinson, R-21st, and the county commissioners, and the ability to use of some of the 19 acres of land the township purchased near the park is what led to approval of the project, he said.

The township will handle the bidding and management of the project, Zarnick said.

He said the township has applied to PennDOT for a highway occupancy permit to begin the project next year.
