SRU blanks Cheyney, 30-0
Slippery Rock University was without its running back and Cheyney found a quarterback.
Despite that combination, The Rock was able to post a 30-0 football victory over the Wolves in a penalty-filled road game Saturday.
"It sounds odd saying this in a 30-0 win, but I was disappointed in our performance today," SRU coach George Mihalik said. "We weren't sharp. We played a sloppy game."
SRU was hit with 14 penalties for 137 yards while Cheyney was penalized 11 times for 97.
Akeem Satterfield — who rushed for 240 yards and four touchdowns last week — missed Saturday's game with a sprained ankle. Penn Hills product Chris Darby replaced him and had 20 carries for 140 yards, including a 1-yard touchdown run to break a scoreless tie with 13:20 left in the first half.
Darby is a transfer from Lincoln College in Philadelphia and is in his first season with SRU.
"It's nice to have depth," Mihalik said. "(Freshman) LaQuinn Stephens-Howling got the start, but didn't seem to have it today. Chris showed a hot hand and we rode it."
Stephens-Howling had 68 yards rushing as SRU (2-0) went over 200 yards on the ground for the second consecutive week.
Cheyney quarterback Chris Anderson, a transfer, was ruled eligible by the NCAA the day before the game. He threw for 126 yards and helped the Wolves generate 259 yards offensively. Cheyney managed only 81 net yards in its season opener.
Still, Anderson could not prevent Cheyney (0-2) from suffering its 30th straight loss overall and second in a row by shutout.
"We watched Anderson in pre-game warmups and he could really throw the ball," Mihalik said. "It made me a little nervous because we hadn't prepared for that.
"We spent the week getting ready for their option game, which they had been running."
Rock quarterback Ryan Sabo threw a pair of touchdown passes to Devin Goda. A 13-yard TD pass with 5:05 left in the first half concluded an 85-yard drive. Sabo found Goda for a 44-yard scoring strike three minutes later.
Goda was on the receiving end of seven of Sabo's eight completions. Goda has three touchdown receptions in two games.
"Most quarterbacks find a favorite target and it looks like those two havemade that connection," Mihalik said.
Zach Sheridan led The Rock with seven tackles, six unassisted, Saturday. Robert Doiley had an interception for the defense's lone takeaway.
SRU also took advantage of special teams play to gain good field position all day. Freshman punter James McCombie averaged 44.5 yards per punt while two Cheyney punters averaged only 22.9 yards on seven kicks.
The Rock returns home Saturday for a 7 p.m. kickoff against PSAC East power West Chester.
