Movie starring Angle stops to shoot scene

The film crew of "Death from Above," starring Kurt Angle, has been shooting across the county and recently filmed a short scene in Evans City.

EVANS CITY — A movie crew that has been filming scenes all across Butler County landed in Evans City last week.

For a town that's been used in films like George Romero's "Night of the Living Dead" and "The Crazies," the movie crew last Friday might not have turned many heads.

The crew came to shoot a small scene for the movie "Death from Above" starring Kurt Angle as the title character. They brought with them only a few props for the scene, mainly a police car that was parked on Main Street.

The small scene shot in Evans City simply shows Kurt Angle riding into town on a motorcycle with a backdrop of Main Street. The crew also shot a short scene in barn on the outskirts of the small borough.

The scene tied up traffic briefly on Main Street Friday afternoon but didn't create significant delays or traffic jams.

"We wanted to establish Kurt's character coming into a small town on a motorcycle right there on Main Street," director Bruce Koehler said. "We were there just a short time. We tried to keep traffic moving, but we had to hold some vehicles for about five minutes."

The plot centers around Angle, who is possessed by an ancient spirit on a "path of death and destruction," according to Koehler. The spirit is intent on searching for and finding four ancient Celtic stones around the area.

While almost all of the filming will take place in Western Pennsylvania, Koehler said, there will be no geographic location mentioned in the film. The crew has been filming in other local municipalities like Valencia and just outside Butler on Route 422.

He said he chose Butler County for filming because he has roots here and likes the natural scenery provided by the rural areas across the county.

"I like shooting out in the country," Koehler said. "Evans City is a smaller town and it has a lot of history with George Romero there. My father also lives in Evans City, and I grew up there for a bit, so I'm familiar with the area."

Koehler praised the borough's police and fire departments, both of which helped set up the scene and deal with traffic. The fire department even helped with some props and other aspects of the scene, he said.

The film should wrap up filming by October and is expected to be released next summer.
