County residents claim top spots at Pa. Farm Show
Many Butler county residents made the trek to Harrisburg last week to celebrate agriculture at the 98th Pennsylvania Farm Show, and some of them brought home awards.
Scott Snyder, 11, had the Reserve Grand Champion market goat, which EdgeMarc Energy purchased for $4,000.
Carl Ealy of Renfrew was the winner of the 34-inch class of miniature horses.
The miniature horse teams compete by pulling sleds a distance of 10 feet with added weight each attempt. The pull had the largest turnout of any of the previous miniature horse pulls at the farm show with 25 teams competing, according to Farm Show officials.
In the pony pulling competition, Ealy also won second place in the middleweight division. Howard Krovak of Slippery Rock placed fifth in the same division.
In the 35th annual Sheep-to-Shawl competition, the Butler County Pedalers placed sixth.
Connie Dunn of Butler won Reserve Champion Ewe in the Merino breed division.
While not capturing a top spot, state Rep. Jaret Gibbons, D-10th, competed in the Legislative Showmanship Contest with 16 other state representatives.
The Pennsylvania Farm Show is the largest indoor agricultural event in the nation, with 24 acres under one roof. It features nearly 6,000 animals, 10,000 competitive exhibits and nearly 300 commercial exhibitors. The farm show ran from Jan. 4 to 11.
